Torres–Cabala CA et al. – Immunohistochemical expression of KIT in less than 10% of the cells of the invasive component of acral lentiginous/mucosal melanomas appears to be a strong negative predictor of KIT mutation and therefore can potentially be used to triage cases for additional KIT genotyping.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Dr CA Torres-Cabala, 09/08/09

This is the largest series of acral-lentiginous/mucosal melanoma evaluated for KIT mutation status and KIT protein expression to date. 15% of the acral-lentiginous/mucosal melanoma cases, including metastases, showed a mutation in KIT. Our results expand the current knowledge on KIT status in melanoma and support the use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors in selected cases.
