Ghrelin and leptin levels in cachectic patients with cancer of the digestive organs
International Journal of Clinical Oncology, 09/01/09
Takahashi M et al. – Neither weight loss nor the grade of symptoms were directly associated with the increase in ghrelin levels. Additionally, the changes in plasma cytokines (TNF-? and IL-6) and leptin in cachectic cancer patients suggest that these molecules may be useful markers for the evaluation of cancer cachexia.
Methods- Prospective study
- 16 cachetic patients with cancer of the GI tract and 10 healthy volunteers
- Cytokines, ghrelin, and leptin levels were determined
- TNF-alpha, IL-6, IL-1Ra, and ghrelin levels were higher in cachetic patients than healthy volunteers, while leptin levels were lower
