Prognosis and patterns of care in elderly patients with glioma
Cancer, 08/31/09
Iwamoto FM et al. – Histologic diagnosis and tumor grade retained significant prognostic value in this elderly oligodendroglioma (OLI) and astrocytoma (AST)population. Age and tumor grade influenced the probability of undergoing surgery, RT, and chemotherapy.
Methods- OLI and AST patients aged ≥ 65 y from SEER Cancer Registry
- Data linked with Medicare claims between 1994 and 2002
- Probability of undergoing surgical resection, RT, and chemotherapy within 6 mos of dx was assessed
- AST (n=891); OLI (n=176)
- Median survival was 9 mos for low-grade AST, 4 mos for anaplastic AST, 57 mos for low-grade OLI, and 9 mos for anaplastic OLI
- Approximately 54% underwent resection at time of dx
- 66% received RT and 13% received chemotherapy within 6 mos of dx
- Age and tumor grade were the most significant predictors of resection, RT, and chemotherapy
- Anaplastic tumors treated with resection, RT, and chemotherapy more often than low-grade tumors
- OLI received chemotherapy more frequently than AST
