Battaglini CL et al. – The exercise protocol used increased cardiovascular endurance, reduced fatigue and depression scores, and maintained quality of life. Although no significant change in inflammation was observed, a trend demonstrating a reduction in IL–6 and an increase in IL–10 warrants further investigation.

Claudio L. Battaglini, 08/18/09

This is one of the first studies that examined the feasibility of administering an in-hospital exercise program to adult acute leukemia patients undergoing treatment. Even though this was a small trial, the results are promissing. The study showed that not only is it feasible to administer an in-hospital exercise prescription to acute leukemia patients in treatment, but it may also benefit these patients physically and psychologically. Larger randomized trials should be conducted to further examine the results of this preliminary study.
