Zheng YL et al. – Short telomere length on chromosome 9p is strongly associated with the risk of breast cancer. If confirmed by future studies, chromosome 9p telomere length has the potential to be incorporated into the current prediction models to significantly enhance breast cancer risk prediction.

This is the first study that demonstrated that telomere deficiency in chromosome 9 short arm is significantly linked to breast cancer risk. We hope more studies will follow. The study highlighted importance to examine each individual arm-specific telomeres and their relationship to cancer risk. The data also suggest that arm-specific telomeres are promising genomic areas to search for highly discriminatory biomarkers for cancer risk assessment.
