Intracranial meningiomas of childhood and adolescence: report of 34 cases with follow-up

Li X et al. – Findings for pediatric intracranial meningiomas show that sex predominance differs from that in adults. The common pediatric presentation is with increased intracranial pressure, decreased visual acuity, and seizure, with a higher incidence for the intraventricle and skull base region and a higher incidence of atypical histopathologic features vs adult pts.
Methods- Study of characteristics of pediatric intracranial meningiomas
- Retrospective assessment of 34 pts with meningiomas treated 2000–2007 at Beijing Tiantan Hospital
- Total resection for 20 cases
- Subtotal resection for 11 cases
- Biopsy for 2 pts due to large tumor volume
- Partial resection for internal carotid artery involvement in 1 pt
- No operative mortality
- Average follow-up: 4 yrs
- Recurrence for 7 pts
- Metastasis for 2 pts
- Adjuvant radiotherapy for residual, malignant, and recurrent tumors
- Mortality for 6 pts at follow-up
