Wong MLH et al. - Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is one of the most angiogenic tumours in humans, thus rendering it an ideal target for anti-angiogenic treatment. Most angiogenesis inhibitors are not highly effective as a monotherapy; however can be combined safely with other adjuvant therapies, in particular temozolomide and concurrent radiotherapy. Such combinations may hold the greatest potential for superior therapeutic efficacy because each component therapy is attacking a slightly different part of the oncogenic machinery.

No angiogenesis inhibitor is approved for the treatment of malignant gliomas. Ongoing clinical trials of potential anti-angiogenic drugs may provide the next new modality in addition to surgery, radiotherapy and cytotoxic chemotherapy for the treatment of malignant gliomas.
