Hanaoka N et al. - Clinical courses of patients with PNH and AA showed a close association of the expression of NKG2D ligands with BM failure and a favourable response to immunosuppressive therapy. The authors therefore propose that NKG2D-mediated immunity may underlie the BM failure in PNH and its-related marrow diseases.

To draw a conclusion, a large scale of analysis is required. However, we authors propose the pathophysiological significance of the NKG2D-mediated immunity: 1) A model for molecular pathogenesis of bone marrow failure syndromes (BFS) including PNH, aplastic anemia, and MDS, 2) Of help for early diagnosis and development of novel therapy for BFS, 3) A clue to etiology of BFS, 4) Of help for study of immune escape of affected cells including cancer cells.
