This test is based on a virus-like particle EIA and is highly specific to MCV without cross-reactivity to other human polyomaviruses. The assay will be useful for assessing MCV infection and for epidemiologic studies designed to identify other diseases associated with MCV. Together with its companion paper describing a monoclonal antibody for detection of MCV T antigen protein expression in tumor cells, these papers demonstrate that MCV is the likely the infectious cause for most Merkel cell carcinomas.
