The level of vascular endothelial growth factor as a predictor of a poor prognosis in osteosarcoma
The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (British Volume), 06/04/09
Kaya M et al. - In a study to evaluate the prognostic significance of serum levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in predicting survival of pts with osteosarcoma, no significant relationship was observed between the serum VEGF levels and gender, age, size of the tumour, or response to pre-operative chemotherapy.
Methods- Levels were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in 15 pts with osteosarcoma before commencing treatment.
- Pts were divided into 2 groups, with a high or a low serum VEGF level, and incidence of metastases and overall survival rate were compared.
- Pts with serum VEGF >1000 pg/ml had significantly worse survival than those with a level <1000 pg/ml.
- Serum VEGF level may be useful in predicting the prognosis for survival in pts with osteosarcoma.
