Skeletal-related events (SREs) in breast cancer patients with bone metastases treated in the nontrial setting
Supportive Care in Cancer, 05/15/09
Trinkaus M et al. - The frequency of SREs in this study was significantly lower than that reported in clinical trials of i.v. BP use. The lower incidence of SREs in this setting could affect sample size calculations for future event-driven BP trials. While the greatest risk of SREs despite BP therapy appears to be in patients with osteoporosis and with metastatic disease confined to the skeleton, further prospective study is merited to confirm and characterize the impact of these risk factors on.

Bone metastases occur in the majority of women with metastatic breast cancer. The results from this study are highly clinically relevant as they demand us to question whether a "one size fits all" bisphosphonate prescription is most efficacious in preventing skeletal related events (SREs). Further prospective study is merited to characterize the optimal use of bisphosphonates in patients who were found to be at highest risk of developing a SRE - persons with bone only disease and/or with osteoporosis. Finally, this study supports current studies investigating the impact of bisphosphonate use in the adjuvant breast cancer setting, as the results may impact these high risk features for developing a SRE upon diagnosis of bone metastases. |
