Long-term radiotherapy related complications in children with head and neck cancer: Another era for pediatric oncologic pathology
International Journal of General Medicine, 05/13/09
Eleftheriadis N et al. - In a case report of 2 male children with head and neck cancer (HNC), who were successfully treated with chemoradiotherapy and presented with growth deficiency of middle face and mandible hypoplasia, it was concluded that late sequelae in children with HNC due to chemoradiotherapy represent a new era for pediatric oncologic pathology for prevention, if possible, or to manage them efficiently.
Methods- Long-term radiotherapy-related complications in children with HNC have been frequently reported, especially facial growth disorders and dental abnormalities.
- This case concerns 2 male children (8 and 14 yrs old) with HNC, who were successfully treated with chemoradiotherapy and presented with growth deficiency of middle face and mandible hypoplasia, 8 yrs and 1 yr later, respectively.
- These severe growth complications were attributed to chemoradiotherapy, while the pts survived primary malignancy.
- Pt age at irradiation was significantly correlated with the severity of disorders.
