Frankincense oil derived from Boswellia carteri induces tumor cell specific cytotoxicity
BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 03/23/09
Frank MB et al. – Study reports that frankincense oil suppresses cancer cell viability through multiple pathways. Frankincense oil might represent an alternative intravesical agent for bladder cancer treatment.
Methods- Aim was to evaluate frankincense oil for its anti-tumor activity and signaling pathways in bladder cancer cells
- Oil-induced cell viability investigated in human bladder cancer J82 cells and immortalized normal bladder urothelial UROtsa cells
- Microarray and bioinformatics analysis to identify regulation of oil-activated gene expression
- Within a range of concn, frankincense oil suppressed cell viability in J82 cells but not in UROtsa cells
- Frankincense oil activated genes responsible for cell cycle arrest, cell growth suppression, and apoptosis in J82 cells
- However, oil-induced cell death did not result in DNA fragmentation, a hallmark of apoptosis
