Layfield LJ et al. - Fine-needle aspiration is an important technique that is used along with ultrasound for the triage of patients with thyroid nodules into operative and nonoperative candidates. The recent National Cancer Institute State of the Science meeting on thyroid aspiration cytology summarized current practice for selection of patients who should undergo FNA.
