Molassiotis A et al. – A review reports that, although no clinical recommendations can be derived from the available studies Chinese medicinal herbs due to low-quality design, the number of studies reporting positive results is high enough to suggest that these herbs may have a role in cancer care.

Methods

Systematic review of the effectiveness of Chinese medicinal herbs used concurrently with cancer treatments
Focus on toxicity management and on quality of life and survival in adult cancer pts
Analysis of 49 trials with 3992 pts meeting inclusion criteria

Results

All studies but 1 of low methodological quality
Most studies found Chinese medicinal herbs improved treatment side effects, quality of life, and performance status
Some studies showed evidence of tumor regression and increased survival
