Osteosarcoma incidence and survival rates from 1973 to 2004: Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program
Cancer, 02/18/09
Mirabello L et al. – A comprehensive, population-based description of osteosarcoma, identified important differences in incidence, survival, pathologic subtype, and anatomic site among age groups, and quantified the impact of osteosarcoma in pts with Paget disease or as a second cancer on incidence and mortality rates. These findings may have implications in understanding osteosarcoma biology and epidemiology.
Methods- Review of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) data 1973-2004 for frequency, incidence, and survival rates in 3,482 osteosarcoma pts
- Analysis by age (0-24, 25-59, 60-85 yrs), race, sex, pathology subtype, stage, anatomic site
- Large differences in incidence and survival rates by age
- High percentage of osteosarcoma with Paget disease and osteosarcoma as second or later cancer among elderly pts
- High percentage of osteosarcoma among pts with Paget disease and osteosarcoma as a second or later cancer among elderly
- Tumor site differences noted among age groups
- Survival rates varied by anatomic site and disease stage and did not improve significantly from 1984 to 2004
