Managing symptoms among patients with breast cancer during chemotherapy: Results of a two-arm behavioral trial
Journal of Clinical Oncology, 12/23/08
Given CW et al. – For metastatic disease pts, an educational information intervention via an automated voice response system to assess symptoms and refer pts to a Symptom Management Guide is more effective for greater symptom responses in a shorter time than a complex cognitive behavioral approach.
Methods- Study to compare symptom response and times to response for breast cancer pt subset
- Pts assigned to either cognitive-behavioral Nurse-Administered Symptom Management intervention or Automated Telephone Symptom Management (ATSM) intervention
- Baseline equivalence between arms; no differential attrition by arm
- Anchor-based definition of response: mild, moderate, and severe categories of symptom severity
- Asessment of responses and times to response for 15 symptoms in relation to trial arm, comorbid conditions, treatment protocols, and metastatic vs localized disease
- ATSM arm more effective among pts with metastatic disease
- Greater response and shorter time to response for pts treated with single agents vs combination chemotherapy protocols
