Porter M et al. – The increase in usage of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) that tends to occur immediately after prostate cancer diagnosis subsides within 2 yrs after treatment. Lack of confidence in CAM's effectiveness characterized all discontinuations, with discontinuation of higher- vs lower-effort therapies more quickly.
Methods- Study of the extent to which men treated for early-stage, localized prostate cancer maintain or discontinue CAM therapies
- Investigation of external and psychological factors related to maintenance or discontinuation of CAM therapies
- Survey questionnaire for subset of 225 pts from study of initiation and use of CAM therapies after prostate cancer diagnosis
- Main outcome measures: usage history for most common 17 CAM therapies in prostate cancer
- Likert-scale endorsement of reasons for discontinuing or not trying CAM therapies
- Computation of discontinuation index: ratio of discontinuation cases vs cases of attempted CAM
- CAM usage decreased by ~25% within 2 yrs after treatment for early-stage localized prostate cancer
- Most frequently cited beliefs for discontinued therapies: CAM was ineffective, generally unsuitable, or harmful
- Pt judgments for discontinuation based on lack of objective criteria
