Meng M-B et al. – In a comparison of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) plus transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) vs TACE alone (therapy I vs II), therapy I benefited pts with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (UHCC). Pts with TACE frequency <3 times (subgroup A,) had improved pt survival of patients more symptom amelioration.
Methods- Meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials for comparison of efficacy and safety of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) plus transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) vs TACE alone (therapy I vs II) in treating UHCC
- Literature retrieval with Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CBMdisk, and CNKI in any language
- Meta-analysis on results of homogeneous studies
- Analyses subdivided by TACE frequency (subgroup A, <3 times; subgroup B, ≥3 times, but not for both therapy I and II
- For 2653 pts in 37 trials:
- Therapy I (vs II) improved pt survival, quality of life, symptom alleviation, and tumor response, and was thus more therapeutically beneficial
- Subgroup A better in terms of pt survival and symptom alleviation
- Similar improved tumor response for both subgroups
- No serious adverse events reported
