The use of complementary and alternative medicine among Chinese women with breast cancer
Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 10/22/08
Chen Z et al. - More research is needed to determine the effectiveness, safety, and interaction with conventional cancer treatment on breast cancer survival for complementary and alternative medicine (CAM)
Methods- Cross-sectional cohort study based on data from the Shanghai Breast Cancer Survival Study (SBCSS) for 5046 women
- Questionnaire to estimate prevalence and perceived benefits of CAM and Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) and relevant demographic and clinical factors
- Interventions/outcome measures: data on CAM use (≥1 day weekly for ≥1 mo), pt sociodemographics, and medical history
- Most common CAM: supplements, then CHM, then physical activity (walking most popular)
- Almost all CHM users used CHM as part of cancer treatment; 75% reported CHM use to boost immune system
- Supplement users: more likely to have higher income, higher educational attainment, be married, have undergone or completed radiotherapy, used tamoxifen, have estrogen receptor (ER)-negative/progesterone receptor (PR)-negative cancer, and have menopausal symptoms
- CHM use associated with younger age, higher income, menopausal symptoms, chemotherapy completion, and past tamoxifen use
- Less CHM in pts with earlier clinical stage or pts who had radiotherapy
- Chemotherapy or radiotherapy and cancer metastasis were positively related to physical activity
- Current tamoxifen use, ER-/PR- cancer, higher educational attainment, and reporting average or better quality of life inversely related to exercise participation
