Nga M-E et al. – Combination of positive HBME-1 (luminal/membranous) and CK 19 (cytoplasmic) staining on cell blocks of thyroid cytologic specimens is highly discriminatory in the diagnostic workup for papillary thyroid carcinoma Methods
Study of the value of immunostain for HBME-1 and CK19 expression in cell blocks prepared from needle aspiration specimens from 22 thyroid nodules with follow-up histology
Results
Both CK19 and HBME-1 were strongly positive in all 9 cases of papillary thyroid carcinoma, the latter showing distinct luminal accentuation
Of non-papillary carcinomas, none were positive for both HBME-1 and CK19
Of 6 Hurthle cell neoplasms, 2 were positive for CK19 but all were negative for HBME-1
Of 9 goitrous nodules, 1 was strongly positive for HBME-1 with luminal/membranous staining but negative for CK19
Sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value in distinguishing between papillary thyroid carcinoma and goitrous nodules/Hurthle cell neoplasms: HBME-1, 100%, 92.9%, 0.9; combination HBME-1 and CK19, 100%, 100%, and 1, respectively
