Diaz D et al. – Inhaled IL-2 has systemic immunomodulatory effects in renal cell carcinoma Methods
Study using 4-color flow cytometry to characterize immunophenotypic alterations, determine prevalence of lymphocyte apoptosis, and detect evidence of systemic effect of inhaled IL-2
Review of peripheral blood lymphocytes in 8 metastatic renal cell carcinoma pts and 8 healthy controls
Results
T, B and NK lymphocytes of untreated pts showed profound changes characterized by increased susceptibility to both spontaneous and mitogen-induced ex vivo apoptosis, modified distribution of main lymphocyte populations in peripheral blood, and altered activation status
Proportion of regulatory T cells also increased in these pts
Treatment with inhaled IL-2 normalized apoptosis rate in all studied lymphocyte subpopulations, as well as their distribution and activation status
