Rana F et al. - As adjuvant therapy, aromatase inhibitors have been found to be superior to tamoxifen in postmenopausal women. Tumors expressing all levels of ER- or PgR-positivity have a better response rate to aromatase inhibitors than to tamoxifen. In conjunction with these significant response rates, aromatase inhibitors also effectively reduce the need for mastectomy and allow for breast-conserving surgery in locally advanced and large primary breast cancers. The option of neoadjuvant treatment with aromatase inhibitors should be discussed with postmenopausal women who have locally advanced or large primary breast carcinomas.
