Vlad O et al. - For physicians involved in the care of critically ill patients with hematologic malignancies, it is important to recognize that some patients with leukemia are at high risk for acute respiratory failure. Our patient had an unfortunate outcome, but previous studies showed that intensive ICU support can decrease mortality in patients with AML M5 who have acute respiratory failure secondary to pulmonary leukemic infiltration. Likewise, the possibility of leukemia should be considered when evaluating a patient with shortness of breath.
