Dent R et al. – Excess risk of distant recurrence in triple-negative breast cancers, vs other cancer forms, is attributable to an excess of visceral metastases in the first 5 years after diagnosis; triple-negative breast cancers defined as those that were estrogen receptor-negative, progesterone receptor-negative and HER2/neu-negative Methods
Study of 1608 breast cancer pts to compare incidence of metastatic spread to bone and to other (non-bone) organs in pts with triple-negative and other forms of breast cancer
Results
Triple-negative breast cancer in 180 pts (11.2%)
Median follow-up: 9 ys (range 0.1–19 yrs)
Increased likelihood of distant recurrence over the study period in triple-negative breast cancer pts vs other pts
Relatively poor prognosis apparent in 5 years after diagnosis
Visceral metastasis within 5 years of diagnosis: 4 times more likely in triple-negative breast cancer pts vs pts with other cancers
Bone metastases rates comparable for triple-negative and other cancers
