Ch'ng S et al. - This study reports that the increasing parotid (P) and neck (N) category worsened the prognosis in metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) significantly. Further prospective multi-center studies are warranted in order to arrive at a staging system that better prognosticates for cutaneous SCC. Methods
Study to define the clinical outcome of pts with head and neck metastatic cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
Pts treated at the 4 major head & neck surgical oncology centers in New Zealand were identified and restaged
Proposed staging system, with modifications for pathological staging was tested
Survival rates were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method
Impact of each proposed P and N sub-group, and other parameters was assessed
Results
170 pts were identified
5-yr disease-specific survival rate was 69%
Loco-regional recurrence rate was 63%
The presence of parotid or neck disease, immunosuppression and the uptake of radiotherapy impacted significantly on survival
Increasing P or N category worsened the prognosis significantly
