van Steenbergen LN et al. – The incidence of breast ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) increased markedly in southern Netherlands since 1992, showing a clear effect of mass mammography screening

Methods

  • Study of trends in incidence and detection of breast DCIS to assess the effect of mass screening
  • Review of 1,767 pts with primary DCIS in the population-based Eindhoven Cancer Registry from 1984-2006
  • Data linked to population-based screening program data

Results
  • Breast DCIS incidence increased from 3/100,000 to ~34/100,000 person-years in women age 50–69 yr since 1984
  • Increase was due to mass screening
  • Screen-detected DCIS in 60% of pts
  • DCIS found in >11% of breast cancer pts
