For the last decade drugs have represented the second-largest component of health spending, after hospitals. The share of drugs in total health expenditure was 9.5% in 1985, increasing with each subsequent year to reach 16.7% in 2006 and an estimated 16.8% in 2007. On a per capita basis drug spending is estimated to have reached $818 in 2007.
