Methods

  • Study of VEGF mRNA in plasma as a possible surrogate marker of tumor angiogenesis in colorectal cancer pts
  • Quantitative PCR to measure VEGF mRNA in plasma, tumors, and circulating tumor cells in colorectal cancer pts
  • ELISA analysis of circulating VEGF protein
  • Determination of microvessel density

Results
  • VEGF mRNA and plasma protein levels higher in pts vs controls
  • VEGF mRNA overexpressed in tumors vs normal tissues
  • VEGF protein levels associated with plasma VEGF mRNA; no associations with tumor samples
  • High VEGF mRNA and vascular invasion showed trend to statistical significance
  • MVD unrelated to plasma VEGF mRNA
