Davey K et al. - In a study to assess the impact of PET-CT on management of primary rectal cancer, it seems that PET-CT scan impacts the management of pts with primary rectal cancer and influences staging/therapy in a third of pts and should be a component of rectal cancer workup Methods
83 pts with rectal cancer underwent PET-CT scan
Referring physicians prospectively recorded stage and management plan after conventional imaging before PET-CT scan, which were compared with subsequent stage and management after PET-CT
Results
Staging PET-CT caused a change in stage from conventional imaging in 26 pts
12 were upstaged and 14 were downstaged
PET-CT scan altered management intent in 7 pts
Management was altered in 10 pts
There was no difference in impact with respect to tumor height
