Liang R et al. – Induction regimen of cytosine arabinoside, daunorubicin, and etoposide had acceptable toxicity, with efficacy comparable with that of standard regimens Methods
Study of induction regimen in 46 pts with previously untreated acute myeloid leukemia
Administration of cytosine arabinoside (100 mg/m2/day as 18-hr IV infusion for 7 days), daunorubicin (50 mg/m2/day as IV bolus injection for 3 days), and etoposide (75 mg/m2/day by 1-h IV infusion for 7 days)
Results
Complete remission for 30 pts (67%); further consolidation and maintenance chemotherapy administered
Of 31 complete responders, 15 (48%) relapsed
Median disease-free survival of 31 complete responders: 25 mo
Median overall survival of all 46 pts: 14 mo
None of the clinical characteristics (sex, age, FAB morphology, extramedullary disease, initial WBC count) predicted clinical response
Toxicity: major toxicity was myelosuppression; acceptable non-hematologic side effects
