Cardo LJ et al. - Washing does not eliminate the ability of PRBC units to prime neutrophils and mononuclear cells, because the cellular component of PRBC, in addition to the supernatant, induces priming. Leukodepletion filters significantly reduce these effects compared with unfiltered PRBC.
