Meers S et al. - In a trial to explore the immune compartment in pts with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), it was found that although activated T lymphocytes can be found in MDS, their role in disease pathogenesis remains unclear in the majority of pts Methods
The immune compartment was studied in pts with MDS
Results
Increased surface expression of activation markers was shown on T lymphocytes in blood and bone marrow
T cell activation was not restricted to any relevant clinical subgroup (FAB, IPSS, cytogenetics) and did not correlate with blood counts or need for treatment
In vitro clonogenic growth of marrow mononuclear cells was not influenced by T cells expressing these markers
Using X-chromosome inactivation analysis, clonal involvement of NK and B cells was shown in half of these pts
