Immediate and Long-Term Outcome of Redo Percutaneous Mitral Valvuloplasty: Comparison with Initial Procedure in Patients with Rheumatic Mitral Restenosis
Journal of Interventional Cardiology, 10/20/09
Rifaie O et al. – Redo PMV for mitral restenosis is feasible, safe, and achieves immediate and long–term outcome comparable to initial PMV.
Wail Nammas, 10/21/09
| Our series presented one of the longest periods of follow-up after redo PMV, reported to date in literature (up to 120 months). It demonstrated that the procedure of redo percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty (PMV) for patients with mitral restenosis after successful initial PMV is feasible with a high procedural success rate, a low complication profile, and a satisfactory long term outcome. The feasibility of redo PMV for mitral restenosis with a relatively high procedural success rate, an acceptable complication profile and a satisfactory long term outcome - as compared to initial PMV for de novo mitral stenosis – makes it an appealing therapeutic strategy for patients with recurrent mitral valve stenosis. In these patients, the procedure of redo PMV would constitute a suitable alternative to surgery on the long term. This might be particularly attractive in young females with child-bearing potential, in order to defer the need for valve replacement. Over and above, it might serve as an acceptable approach to avoid surgery in selected patients with high operative risk. |
