Transfemoral percutaneous removal of a knotted Swan-Ganz catheter
Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, 10/22/09
Katsikis A et al. – The authors describe the successful nonsurgical removal of a Swan–Ganz catheter, after the formation of a large double knot, during a right heart catheterization performed without fluoroscopic guidance in the intensive care unit. This technique could serve as a last resort in cases that surgical removal seems inevitable due to size–related inapplicability of other nonsurgical methods.

| Knot formation in Swan-Ganz (SG) catheters is rare but can occur, especially when the tip of the catheter is advanced too far without obtaining a wedge tracing at an appropriate depth. Any physician who performs pressure tracing guided right heart catheterizations should be familiar with this complication and the available means to deal with it. This article provides a brief and essential review of the available techniques of non-surgical removal of knotted SG catheters, describing in a detailed manner a practical method which works well even in cases of unusually large knots. |
