Baranchuk A et al. – Digital and analog phones produce EMI on modern ECG machines when activated in direct contact to the acquisition module. EMI impairs ECG interpretation.

Exclusive Author Commentary
Adrian Baranchuk, 10/21/09

Cellular phones (digital and analog) produced electromagnetic interference (EMI) on ECG machines using external acquisition modules. An evaluation of the ECG recordings with interference (mixed with "real ECGs") were tested in different groups of health care professionals. EMI impaired proper ECG interpretation in health care professionals that are usually the first ones taking medical decisions based on their interpretations. Cellular phones should be used with care when recording ECGs with machines that use external acquisition modules.
