Cardiovascular Benefit of Magnitude of Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Reduction. A Comparison of Subgroups by Age
Circulation, 09/30/09
Rahilly–Tierney CR et al. – In a cohort of veterans at high risk for cardiovascular events, patients of all ages, including those 80 years or older, benefitted the most from large reductions in LDL–C.
Catherine R. Rahilly-Tierney, 10/02/09
| In this cohort of veterans at high risk for adverse cardiac events, we found that veterans across quartiles of age benefitted quantitatively similarly for a given reduction in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). That is, subjects with the largest change in LDL-C achieved approximately 70% risk reduction, regardless of their age. Moreover, in veterans of any age, we found that the size of cardiovascular risk reduction was graded and proportional to the size of LDL-C change, regardless of whether subjects achieved pre-determined "target" LDL-C levels. Our study corroborates qualitatively and quantitatively those of previous researchers, who have demonstrated a linear relationship between cholesterol change and cardiovascular benefit. |
