Yong G et al. – In adults with ASDs, severity of PAH is modulated by age, sex, defect size, and degree of tricuspid regurgitation. Patients with moderate or severe PAH may benefit from substantial reductions in pulmonary artery pressures after transcatheter ASD closure, although the PAH values remain elevated in a sizeable proportion.

| This is an important study showing the natural evolution of the pulmonary pressure after percutaneous atrial septal closure (ASD). Although patients with severe pulmonary hypertension have the most significant reduction of the pulmonary pressure and despite the fact that they have a significant favorable remodeling of the right chambers of the heart, the pulmonary pressure remain often high. It is suggestive that these patients need to be followed very carefully and that further treatment should considered if they remain symptomatic. |
