Sun JCJ et al. – A review of antithrombotic therapies for pts with prosthetic heart valves and management of thromboembolic complications concludes that advances in antithrombotic therapy and valve technologies will improve pt management in developed countries. However, developing countries with a massive and rapidly increasing burden of valvular heart disease have a critical unmet need and high benefit potential from these new therapies.
Methods- Review of antithrombotic therapies for pts with prosthetic heart valves and management of thromboembolic complications
- Globally prosthetic heart valves for >4 million pts
- Estimated 300,000 valves/yr implanted
- Valves improve pt quality of life and survival in severe valvular heart disease
- Need for antithrombotic therapy to prevent thrombotic complications in valve recipients is challenging
