Sleep and health-related quality of life in heart failure
Congestive Heart Failure, 08/14/09
Mills PJ et al. – Findings support that, in addition to functional status and ongoing fatigue, poorer quality of life in heart failure (HF) is independently related to the severity of sleep-disordered breathing.
Methods- Study to characterize sleep in HF
- Determination of associations with quality of life
- Assessment of 40 stable HF pts and 34 healthy volunteers in a clinical research unit
- HF pts: more central apneas/hr and obstructive apneas/hr, more time in stage 1 sleep, more respiratory awakenings after apneic events
- More HF pts depressed and had worse fatigue
- In multiple regression analysis, physical functioning quality of life predicted by reduced left ventricular ejection fraction, shorter distance on a 6-min walk test, greater fatigue, and more apneas
- Emotional functioning quality of life predicted by greater fatigue
