Plasma vitamin B6 and risk of myocardial infarction in women
Circulation, 08/14/09
Page JH et al. – Fasting plasma concentration of pyridoxal phosphate was inversely associated with myocardial infarction risk, an effect in part independent of dietary B6 intake. In addition to dietary vitamin B6 intake, other determinants of plasma vitamin B6 status warrant further research.
Methods- Prospective study of the relationships between fasting plasma levels of vitamin B6, as pyridoxal phosphate, and subsequent myocardial infarction risk in women
- Blood samples 1989-1990 32,826 women (27% of original 1976 cohort)
- Incident myocardial infarction (fatal and nonfatal) diagnosed after blood collection but before July 1998 for 239 pts
- Of 239 pts, sample for 144 after fasting >10 hrs
- Case match 1:2 by age, cigarette smoking status, and month of and fasting status at time of blood collection with controls from same cohort
- Conditional logistic regression to adjust for potential confounders: traditional coronary risk factors, anthropometric factors, dietary intake, selected biomarkers
- Median age at blood collection was 63 yrs
- Plasma levels of pyridoxal phosphate inversely associated risk of myocardial infarction
- Multivariable-adjusted rate ratio for highest compared vs lowest quartiles (>70 vs <27.9 pmol/mL) was 0.22
- Association varied by age
- Among women age <60 yrs at blood sampling, rate ratio comparing highest vs lowest quartiles was 0.05
- Among older women, corresponding rate ratio was 0.36
