Childhood dairy and calcium intake and cardiovascular mortality in adulthood: 65-y follow-up of the Boyd Orr cohort
Heart, 08/11/09
van der Pols J et al. – A historical study reports that children in the 1930s with a calcium-rich family diet had reduced risk of death from stroke. Childhood diets rich in dairy or calcium were associated with lower all-cause mortality in adulthood.
Methods- Historical study of whether dairy and calcium consumption in childhood is associated with adult mortality due to coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and all-causes
- Assessment of 7-day household food inventories for family food consumption
- Subjects: 4999 children in England and Scotland from 1937-1939
- Report of cause of death ascertained from 1948-2005 in 4374 traced cohort members with complete data
- Per capita household intake estimates for dairy products and calcium as proxies for individual intake
- No strong evidence for an association of CHD or stroke mortality with a dairy-rich childhood family diet
- Childhood calcium intake inversely associated with stroke mortality but not CHD mortality
- All-cause mortality lowest in pts with highest family dairy and calcium intake
