Correlation between cognitive impairment and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in patients with cardiovascular diseases
International Journal of Cardiology, 08/07/09
Suwa M et al. – The occurrence of cognitive impairment (CI) increased with the prevalence of diabetes in elderly pts with cardiovascular diseases and deteriorated left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction.
Methods- Study of the relation between cognitive function and LV diastolic dysfunction in pts with cardiovascular disease
- Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and echocardiography with tissue Doppler analysis in 81 pts with various cardiovascular diseases and preserved LV ejection fraction (EF>40%)
- Of 81 pts, 13 had CI (MMSE score <24); remaining 68 had no CI (MMSE score ≥24)
- Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels elevated in pts with vs without CI
- Ratio of early diastolic mitral inflow velocity to early mitral annular myocardial velocity by tissue Doppler elevated in pts with vs without CI
- Prevalence of diabetes mellitus higher in pts with vs without CI
