Effects of aerobic training intensity on resting, exercise and post-exercise blood pressure, heart rate and heart-rate variability
Journal of Human Hypertension, 06/29/09
Cornelissen VA et al. – In older pts, both training programs exert similar effects on systolic blood pressure (SBP) at rest, during exercise and during post-exercise recovery, whereas the effects on heart rate (HR) are more pronounced after higher intensity training.
Methods- Study of the effects of endurance training intensity on 2 points
- 1) on SBP and HR at rest before exercise, and during and after a maximal exercise test
- 2) on measures of HR variability at rest before exercise and during recovery from exercise test
- Subjects: healthy sedentary men and women age ≥55 yr
- Randomization crossover study: three 10-wk periods
- Periods 1 and 3: pts exercised at lower or higher intensity (33% or 66% of HR reserve) in random order, with a sedentary period in between
- Training programs identical except for intensity; performed under supervision 3x for 1 hr per wk
- Endurance training at lower and higher intensity reduced SBP significantly and similarly for all 3 conditions (at rest before exercise, during exercise, and during recovery
- SBP during recovery not lower than at rest before exercise
- Chronic endurance training did not affect SBP response after acute exercise
- Effect of training on HR at rest, during exercise and recovery more pronounced with higher intensity
- Endurance training had no significant effect on sympathovagal balance
