Delayed neutrophil apoptosis in patients with unstable angina: relation to C-reactive protein and recurrence of instability

Biasucci LM et al. – Findings show delayed polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) apoptosis in unstable angina (UA). This alteration may be involved in persistence of inflammatory activation and affects recurrence of instability.

Methods

Study of spontaneous PMNs apoptosis in UA and its association with recurrence of instability
Compared PMNs apoptotic rate at 4 hr and 24 hr in pts with UA, stable angina (SA), and controls (H) with 2 different protocols by flow cytometry
Measurement of apoptotic rate of isolated PMNs (Protocol 1) in 30 UA pts, 13 SA pts, and 34 H; and apoptosis of PMNs in whole blood culture (Protocol 2) in further 10 UA pts, 7 SA pts, and 6 H
Measurement of serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein

Results

Decreased apoptotic rate for PMNs of UA pts vs with SA pts and H at 4 hr in Protocol 1 and at 24 hr in Protocol 2
In overall population, negative correlation between apoptotic rate at 4 hr and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein levels
Among 40 pts with UA, 6 had early recurrence of symptoms
For pts with early recurrence of symptoms apoptotic rate significantly reduced vs UA pts without recurrence of symptoms
