Influence of pre-hypertension on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality: The Singapore Cardiovascular Cohort Study
International Journal of Cardiology, 06/30/09
Lee J et al. – Pre-hypertension (pre-HTN) was not an independent risk factor for mortality, despite an increased risk of mortality for pre-HTN in presence of other cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. This finding supports current recommendations to screen for these risk factors in the pre-HTN Asian population.
Methods- Study of the effect of pre-HTN alone and in combination with other CVD risk factors in relation to mortality in Asian populations
- Subjects from 3 cross-sectional studies in Singapore (baseline 1982–1995) of 5830 pts
- Groups: normotensive (NT), pre-HTN or hypertensive (HTN)
- Follow-up (median 12.0 yrs, IQR 12–19 yrs) by linkage to National Death Register
- Outcomes: all-cause and CVD (ischemic heart disease (ICD-9 410–414) and cerebrovascular accidents (ICD-9 430–438)
- After adjustment, pre-HTN not associated with statistically significant increased risk of all-cause or CVD mortality
- Risk for all-cause and CVD mortality increased in presence of diabetes, smoking, and especially pre-existing CVD
