Metabolic syndrome predicts lower functional recovery in female but not in male patients after an acute cardiac event
International Journal of Cardiology, 06/26/09
Caminiti G et al. – Coronary heart disease (CHD) pts with metabolic syndrome (MS) have lower functional recovery and lower heart rate recovery (HRR) than pts without MS. However MS is an independent predictor of lower exercise capacity only in female gender.
Methods- Study of whether MS has a gender dependent effect on recovery of functional capacity in CHD pts undergoing cardiac rehabilitation
- Assessment of 286 CHD pts, age 66.2±10.6 (median±SD); M/F 187/99
- Pt classification by presence of MS (48%) or without MS (52%)
- Multivariate logistic regression model included body mass index, age, gender hypertension, ejection fraction and diabetes
- MS in 48% of pts
- Assessment of functional capacity by distance walked at 6-min walking test (6MWT) and by maximal exercise test
- Less distance at 6MWT, lower maximal exercise capacity, and lower HRR for pts with vs without MS
- Similar degree of functional recovery for men with/without MS (51%)
- Significantly lower recovery for women with MS vs without MS (20% vs 40%)
- In multivariate logistic regression, MS predicted reduced performance at 6MWT in overall population and in women, but was not predictive in men
