• Drug-taking behavior—adherence and persistence with antihypertensive regimens—influences BP control rates
• Rates vary greatly among antihypertensive classes based on many factors affecting pt adherence and persistence, including drug efficacy and tolerability
• Medications with fewer adverse effects associated with increased adherence and lower discontinuation rates
• Widespread use of these drugs (and generic or low-cost formulations) may lead to better long-term BP control and fewer cardiovascular events
