New antithrombotic agents: Are they needed and what can they offer to patients with a non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome?
European Heart Journal, 06/05/09
Van de Werf F et al. – A review describes the rationale for and current status of trials of new antithrombotic agents in non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome.
Methods- Review of new antithrombotic agents in non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome
- Antithrombotic therapy: cornerstone of treatment as shown by numerous clinical trials
- Long-term oral antiplatelet therapy targeting specific platelet activation pathways: significant long-term benefit
- Antithrombin use: limited to acute setting
- Long-term dual oral antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and clopidogrel: proven efficacy but residual, considerable morbidity and mortality
- These effects may be partly due to incomplete inhibition of platelet activation and/or lack of long-term anticoagulant therapy
- Improvements in outcomes may be achieved by developing agents to inhibit other platelet activation pathways or by adding new anticoagulants prolonged duration after acute event
