Altered monocyte CD44 expression in peripheral arterial disease is corrected by fish oil supplementation
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases, 03/27/09
Madden J et al. – Monocyte CD44 and CD44 variant 3 (CD44v3) expression are altered in arterial disease but are returned towards levels by dietary fish oil supplementation.
Methods- Study of CD44 and CD44v3 expression on peripheral blood monocytes from pts with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and healthy controls
- Assessment of the effect of fish oil supplementation on these markers
- CD44 and CD44v3 analysis at baseline and after dietary supplementation with fish oil for 12 wks in PAD and controls
- Monocytes from PAD pts had higher CD44 expression vs controls
- After 12 wks dietary supplementation with fish oil, CD44 expression reduced in PAD pts but not controls
- Monocyte CD44v3 expression lower in cultured monocytes from PAD pts vs controls
- Expression increased in PAD group after fish oil supplementation
