Altered monocyte CD44 expression in peripheral arterial disease is corrected by fish oil supplementation

Madden J et al. – Monocyte CD44 and CD44 variant 3 (CD44v3) expression are altered in arterial disease but are returned towards levels by dietary fish oil supplementation.

Methods

Study of CD44 and CD44v3 expression on peripheral blood monocytes from pts with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and healthy controls
Assessment of the effect of fish oil supplementation on these markers
CD44 and CD44v3 analysis at baseline and after dietary supplementation with fish oil for 12 wks in PAD and controls

Results

Monocytes from PAD pts had higher CD44 expression vs controls
After 12 wks dietary supplementation with fish oil, CD44 expression reduced in PAD pts but not controls
Monocyte CD44v3 expression lower in cultured monocytes from PAD pts vs controls
Expression increased in PAD group after fish oil supplementation
